About Thomas Ryan

I specialize in macro-photography with an emphasis on floral images. I also photograph landscapes, still life, and other images using fish-eye, telephoto, macro, and other lenses. Fish-eye lenses produce images that encompass a 120 degree view of the subject. My goal with photography is to catch fleeting moments in nature and in peoples lives. Clarity, color, and quality are at the top of my list when choosing to share these images with you. When people study my photographs, they appear to be calm and everything slows down. I like to say they have taken a "visual vacation." Email: Trphoto@cox.net

When I photograph flowers or landscapes, I line up and focus on ten times the number of actual photographs that are photographed. When I find a subject that raises my curiosity to actually photograph, it undergoes a multitude of personal criteria: uniqueness, color saturation, can it be isolated, imperfections (detractors or benefactors to the image), shadows, lighting, and a decluttered image in the frame. The shutter most often is clicked when a majority of these factors fall in place.

I approach photography in two ways: art composition and final cohesiveness of the subject matter. These work together to create something that supercedes the everyday image. Photography, with all of its advances, continues to be a science between the environment and the camera. The outcome of the artwork is a report card of how these variables were overcome. This tends to be the most frustrating and humbling aspect of photography.

Because I live in the Midwest, nature's life cycles are rarely static. This provides me with a perplexing number of subject matter to evaluate. I've found that, as in everyday life, subtleties and details become blurred and homogenized into one overall picture. I slow the visual process down, making sure that I isolate the subject matter, check the lighting, and grasp the uniqueness of the subject.

My horizons continue to broaden as my proficiency in areas of photography improve. In the future I plan to do a series of photographs based on the human eye and then human hands (single hands, couple's hands, and hands of a family).
